grandma and grandpa go green

We always love to hear from people about what they’re doing to save money and the environment at the same time (so often the two go hand in hand). People submit such creative, thoughtful ideas on the subject that we’re just continuously amazed. So far, one of our most exciting submittals we’ve received (I’ll admit some bias on this one) is from my grandparents, Judy and Wayne Eckstein.

Pictured above is my grandma, Judy Eckstein, who has been following our blog (thanks Grandma!) and simultaneously implementing various eco-friendly changes at home.  Among the changes she and my grandfather, Wayne Eckstein, have incorporated is a rain water catchment system that they use for all of their gardening needs.  They are super pleased with how effective it’s proved at reducing their water+sewer bills in the spring and summer months.

My grandma also just purchased a brand new washing machine - the Samsung’s SilverCare Washing Machine - which she’s excitedly showing off above.  It uses 14 gallons a wash - that’s way better than the 35 to 40 gallons their previous one used.  In fact, their new washer is so green that it earned a write up on Treehugger!  My grandfather is now closely tracking their water+sewer bills to see how the washer’s efficient features will translate into savings.  Right now his money is on a 10% to 15% savings, but we’ll keep you updated as the real numbers come in.

In the mean time, please send us your ideas for using less at home (less water, less energy, less stuff).  Not only do we find your ideas inspiring, but the best ideas are always so inspiring that we’ll want to share with others, so you could get your submission posted right here on our blog!  Can’t wait to hear from you.
