green cards

During a recent site visit, friends/clients Dean and Kathi Wolf gave me a fabulous gift for the ride home (very thoughtful of them, especially considering the ride was several hours long): “The Earth Friendly House” cards by Knowledge Cards. James Kean, a project manager at mkd, and I played with them a bit on the way home. They’re in a Q&A format that is meant to not only test but educate people about green housing. There were some pretty great topics plus it was fun; I’m not at all embarrassed to say that we got pretty into it. Here are a few examples of the quiz questions:
Q: “What simple change can cut laundry energy use in half?” A: “Switching your washing machine’s temperature setting from hot to warm.”
Q: “Building a new 2000 square foot house creates 2 tons of waste that must be landfilled. True or False?” A: “False. It creates THIRTEEN tons!” This card then also lists ways of creating less waste. Very helpful.
Q:”At one drop of water per second, how many gallons will a leaky faucet waste in a year?” A: “About 2700 gallons per year. A leaky toilet can be even worse, wasting as much as 7200 gallons per year.” This Q&A is then followed by helpful ways to avoid wasting water due to a leak.
In total, there are 48 cards, which means 48 opportunities for you to learn more about greening your home or educating some one else. So these can be a great gift for your inquisitive friends or for your eco-minded self and family. It can be a fun way to talk about sustainability with your kids, too.
So now guess what’s on my wishlist: the companion deck, “The Earth-Friendly Garden“!
