plant a christmas tree

bamboo-tree.jpgInstead of getting a precut tree, cutting down your own, or buying a plastic one (these are probably the least green option of all since most are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which a big no-no for the environmentally minded) you can buy a potted living Christmas tree. These can first be decorated and displayed in your home and then later planted in your yard. They will last a maximum of about a week indoors so buying your tree is one thing on your holiday to-do list you can put off until the last minute. Something to keep in mind is that transplanting trees in the winter isn’t possible in all climates so consult with your local nursery before attempting to do so. Another option may be to find a tree that can survive a few months in its pot and then be planted in the spring.

If you turn this tip into a tradition you’ll eventually have a yard full of beautiful reminders of Christmases past. Kevin, my husband, and I now have seven old Christmas trees in our yard (my favorite is our 2004 Christmas bamboo tree!). The best part: you’ll also be giving a little Christmas gift to our planet by housing one more carbon eating tree every year.
