earth day activity kit: Eco Candles

Making homemade Eco Candles is the perfect Earth Day DIY project for the romantic whose heart burns “green” hot. Most of us are pretty aware that things like gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and even plastic are petroleum products derived from oil. But candles? Yes, all those pretty, fragrant candles made from paraffin wax come to you from the very ungreen world of crude oil and so also come from a limited resource that, as we know, we’re beginning to use up. Not so romantic. The sustainable solution to this eco-quandary is candles made from natural waxes such as soy, palm, and beeswax.

These sustainably sourced candles may or may not be hard to find where you live, but either way, making them yourself is the best way to go. It’s more fun, less expensive, and you get to customize the scent and color of your candles however you like. It’s also a wonderful way to reuse old glass or ceramic containers you have around the house. You can even salvage containers from old candles. This project is a great way to set the mood the eco-friendly way or to light up your sweetheart’s Earth Day with a very romantic green gift.
