Chatting with Eva on her “Pebbles” at the Dwell on Design Conference last week

Last Friday I had the pleasure of speaking at the Dwell on Design Conference in Los Angeles. It was a fantastic conference (we’d expect nothing less from the people who bring us such a fantastic magazine!) that included an equally fantastic exhibition of innovative, modern design elements for the home. When I wasn’t speaking I was busy checking out all the fabulous eco furnishings on display there. One of my favorite finds was the “Pebble” by Eva Sobesky, who also happens to be a dear friend of mine.

Eva’s Pebble is a super cool and very unique organic seat that comes in three sizes. It’s made from plywood cut into 3 inch thick “ribs” that are then layered on top of each other, tapering smoothly into the shape of a pebble. After the largest sized Pebble is cut and completed, the ribs for the medium Pebble are made from the leftover uncut inner plywood. Then the smallest sized Pebble is made from the remaining plywood. In this way, Eva maximizes the use she gets out of every sheet of plywood and almost eliminates the waste involved in her production process. The Pebble ranges in cost, depending on size, from $800 to $1600. Besides being extremely cute and very green, the Pebble is flexible enough to work wonderfully in either an indoor or outdoor setting. It’s perfect for casual lounging indoors or as a playful accent in any outdoor living space.
